21:14 BST - SPX End of Day Update

On the 3 Options set out on the 60 min counts page, the search  continues for the end of 5 waves up from the August low  to mark the end of minor 2 (or (i) of [c] of 2) on Option 1, the end of wave X on Option 2 or the end of wave [i] of C (or (i) of [iii] of A) on Option 3.

We made another new high for the rally from the August low, but the question remains whether that new high was the end of the rally from the August low or whether there is still more upside to come.

The problem for the immediately bearish case is that we haven't yet seen a clear 5 wave impulsive decline taking out any significant levels so the risk of further upside continues.

You can see the bigger picture into which the following zoomed in charts fit by going to the 60 min counts page where you'll find the 3 Options I'm following for the move down from the April 2010 high.

The first chart is labelled as if Option 1 is playing out and assumes that we topped at 1163.87:

Chart 1: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low, close up:

I don't especially like this count, but its valid and with all other possibilities for the immediately bearish case now eliminated, it'll have to do!

As I said above, the problem with the bearish case is that for some time, the only 5 wave declines we've seen have been quickly overlapped by what, until then, was assumed to be a 4th wave. This has meant that we're left having to count nested ones and twos down and these, in turn, have also failed.

We saw the same situation today, and this has left the bear case with only the count shown above.

It may not be very attractive, but until we take out the high at  1163.87 it is feasible. The odds for this count would greatly improve if we take out the low at 1151.41.

Turning to the near term bullish count, this second chart is labelled as if Option 3 is playing out and assumes we still have more upside to come:

Chart 2: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from August low still in progress:

For this count we have to stay above 1151.41 for it to remain valid. If this count is playing out, then a possible target area for the end of wave (v) would be around the 1173 level which is about the 78.6% retracement of the decline from 1219.80 and also the next higher Gann price level based on the 1039.70 low.

Don't forget the other possible way to count this which I mentioned in the intra day updates - today's high was only wave i of (v) and the decline we saw from there was wave ii. This would mean a potentially substantial rally coming in wave iii. At the moment, I think this count would be low probability since today's decline only retraced 38.2% of the rally from 1131.87, which is perhaps rather shallow for a 2nd wave, but also because it might make wave (v) somewhat out of proportion to wave (i) in the rally from the August low. However, we'll have to see how price action develops.

So, the levels I'm watching for now are 1163.87 and 1151.41.

20:07 BST - SPX Update - wave v of (v) up?

Here's what I'm looking at on the near term bullish count where today's low was wave iv of (v). Unless we take out 1151.41 without a new high, this count remains on the table (wave [1] may have topped at 1158.50):

SPX 1 min - still in wave v of (v):

Note that on the immediately bearish count, 5 waves up from today's low could be wave (C) in a running or expanded flat for wave [2]  -  I mentioned  that as a possibility in the last post.

14:44 BST - SPX Update on the (1)-(2)-1-2 count

The options for the immediately bearish count are narrowing. This was my least favourite way to count the decline from today's high, but, other than a big expanded flat for wave [2], it may be the most likely bear count - its invalidated above 1158.72. In that case, the expanded flat wave [2] will be the bear count and its not pretty:

SPX 1 min - top in at 1163.87 or still in wave iv:

The move up from today's low could be counted as 5 waves for wave [1] of v on the alternate labelling on this chart and that possibility stands until we take out the low at 1151.41.

18:29 BST - SPX Update on the (1)-(2)-1-2 down

Referring to my last post, I'm not sure I like the depth of that wave 4 of (3) on the main count which assumes we topped at 1163.87.  The previous count isn't invalid, but  still, I've re-labelled the (1)-(2)-1-2 as shown below:

SPX 1 min - top in at 1163.87 or still in wave iv?

For this labelling, 1157.42, the wave (2) high, is the invalidation point.

17:45 BST - SPX Update: Top in at 1163.87 or still in wave iv of (v)..... or wave ii of (v)

The ending diagonal and the subdividing wave v of (v) have been eliminated, so the other possibilities mentioned in my previous post become the focus, namely, that we topped at 1163.87, or that we're still in wave iv:

SPX 1 min - top in at 1163.87 or still in wave iv?

The wave iv alternative count may be starting to look unlikley given its size in relation to wave ii, but strictly, its not invalidated unless we take out the wave i high at 1135.87.

The further alternative to this decline being wave iv of (v) is that its wave ii of (v), with today's high being wave i of (v) - something to watch out for, in my view. Its not invalidated unless we take out the wave (iv) low at 1131.87.

If we have topped, then we shouldn't have any difficulty taking out the 1131.87 low and that's the next target to watch for confirmation that some sort of top may be in. In the meantime, to the upside, if we're in wave 3 of (3) now, the next rally should be wave 4 and must stay below the wave 1 low at 1156.43.

15:34 BST - SPX Update: wave v of (v) subdividing or ending diagonal forming?

Here are two possibilities for the move from the 1131.87 low (the labelling on this chart assumes Option 1 on the 60 min counts page is playing out):

SPX 1 min - wave v of (v) subdividing or ending diagonal forming?

The main labelling implies a fair amount more upside. As mentioned in my previous post, one of the levels I wanted to see taken out was 1156.22. We just missed doing so, which means there is the possibility that wave [3] of v is subdividing.

The alternative count that I've labelled would be more limited: if the labels are correct for the diagonal, wave iii is 9.02 points so wave v has to stay below 1165.31, assuming wave v of the diagonal started at 1156.29. Taking out the black dotted line invalidates the diagonal.

The more bearish possibility is that today's high was the end of the rally and we're in the process of forming a larger impulse wave down - the odds of this would increase if we take out 1154.88 and make a clear 5 waves down in doing so. However, the possibility that a big expanded flat wave iv is still forming can't be ruled out - we'd just have to see what happens if and when we get 5 waves down.

14:48 BST- SPX Update

If we take out the high of wave [1] of v on the chart in my last post (its at 1158.41), before we make a new high above 1163.87, I'm going to start thinking today's high is the end of wave [5] of v, not [3] of v. The probability of that increases if we take out the low of wave [2] at 1156.22. However, I then want to see 1154.85 go too.

14:37 BST - SPX Update: Still looking for 5 waves up from 1131.87

With the high at 1162.76 taken out, the count that had yesterday's move as a 4th wave of some degree is now the focus. As mentioned in yesterday's updates, this was always the risk given that the market again did not put in 5 waves to the downside - the decline from the 1162.76 high was only 3 waves.

So, with the re-labelling I mentioned might be necessary, this is how it looks (the chart is labelled as if Option 3 on the 60 min counts page is playing out, but you can see on that page what 5 waves up from the August low would mean on the more bearish counts under Options 1 an 2 on that page):

SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low, close up from 1131.87 wave (iv) low:

The next Gann price level above 1156 is 1173 and that coincides with the 78.6% retracement level of the decline from 1219.80. The price range between 1156 to 1173 is an area to watch for price action that might suggest a top is in for the rally from the August low.

However, as always, until we see an impulsive move to the downside that takes out a significant pivot, the risk of further upside remains. Currently, the level I'm focusing on is at 1154.85.

21:18 BST - SPX End of Day Update

On the 3 Options set out on the 60 min counts page, I've been  looking for the end of 5 waves up from the August low  to mark the end of minor 2 (or (i) of [c] of 2) on Option 1, the end of wave X on Option 2 or the end of wave [i] of C (or (i) of [iii] of A) on Option 3.

We stayed below the high of 1162.76, so that high remains a potential top for the rally from the August low.

However, we haven't yet seen a clear 5 wave impulsive decline from that high, taking out any significant levels so the risk of further upside continues.

You can see the bigger picture into which the following chart fits by going to the 60 min counts page where you'll find the 3 Options I'm following for the move down from the April 2010 high. The following chart is labelled as if Option 1 is playing out and zooms in on the action from the wave (iii) of [c] high at 1157.16. Its updated from the earlier posts to take account of subsequent price action:

SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low, close up:

I've labelled it as if we've compled 5 waves up from the August low. Its tentative at the moment because, as explained in the intra day updates, we haven't seen anything yet to enable us to have any great confidence that a top is in.

The 3 waves down from the high that we've seen so far could be wave [4]  or iv (on this or some variation of this count). The diagonal I've sketched in from today's low for wave a of 2 could be the start of wave [5] or v up. We need to take out the low at 1154.85 to preclude that. The (1)-(2)-1-2 that I've labelled will be invalidated if we move above the high at 1161.75 in an assumed wave 2. If that happens, the likelihood of a new high will be signifcantly increased.

As I said yesterday, to really start thinking that we've seen a top of some sort (what it represent will depend on which Option is playing out), we need to see an impulsive 5 wave decline that takes out a pivot that would enable us to eliminate the bullish possibilities. On the count I've labelled, the two levels I'm continuing to watch are 1152.50 and 1149.21.

I'm watching these levels because on the labelling I have,  its possible that the high I've labelled as wave iii at 1152.50 is only wave [1] of iii (and the high at 1162.76 would be wave [3] of iii). If we take out that high in an assumed wave [4] of iii, that possibility will be ruled out. I'd then want to see the low at 1149.21 which I've labelled as wave iv get taken out to preclude the possibility that wave v might extend.

Of course, taking out those levels doesn't preclude further upside, because on the bigger picture, there are levels lower down that need to be taken out if we have seen the end of 5 waves up from the August low. The first of those will be the low labelled as wave (iv) at 1131.87 (to preclude the possibility that wave (v) is extending).

So, the levels I'm watching for now are 1161.75, 1152.50 and 1149.21.  Taking out 1161.75 reduces the likelihood that we've seen a top and we'll probably go on to take out the high at 1162.76. Taking out 1152.50 and then 1149.21 will greatly increase confidence that a top is in at 1162.76.

20:15 BST - SPX Update on the possible (1)-(2)-1-2 developing from the high

The (1)-(2)-1-2 won out, so now wave 2 of (3) must stay below 1161.75. It counts well at the moment as a double zig zag.

However, since we've still only got 3 waves down from the high at 1162.76, I'm still wary that today's low may only have been the end of wave [4] (until we take out the levels I've mentioned previously). As you can see, I've sketched in a potential diagonal up from today's low which could be the start of the next leg up if today's low was wave [4] - we must take out today's low to eliminate this:

SPX 1 min - top at 1162.76?

19:18 BST - SPX Update: The likelihood of a top at 1162.76 may be increasing

This is what I have at the moment - the bearish count could be on track, but I still want to see the levels mentioned previously (and explained in yesterday's end of day update) taken out (until then I remain wary of further potential upside):

SPX 1 min - top at 1162.76?

Since we stayed below the wave (1) low at 1158.13 on the move up from today's low (so far, at least), the leg down that I've labelled as 1 of (3) could be the whole of (3). If we take out the low at 1154.85 without first taking out 1158.13, I might go with that alternate labelling, but I'll have to see how we retrace if we do get a low below 1154.85 now.

If we take out the low at 1158.13 before making a new low, then the (1)-(2)-1-2 comes into play and the invalidation point will be the wave (2) high at 1161.75.

17:25 BST - SPX Update: Still possible that we topped at 1162.76, but we still need price confirmation

For the count that has us having topped at yesterday's high, I'm now labelling a larger diagonal for wave (1) down, with a 78.6% retracement in wave (2):

SPX 1 min - top in at 1162.76?

I think the Dow took out its equivalent high so the risk that today's low on SPX was the end of wave [4] remains high at present (even though none of the other main indices I'm watching followed the Dow).

If the count I'm showing is correct, we should now move quickly below today's low without any difficulty. That would certainly increase confidence in this labelling while a failure to do so would have the opposite effect. As before, the lower levels mentioned in my previous post then need to be taken out in an impulsive move, otherwise, I would have to expect more upside.

15:36 BST - SPX Update - possible bearish count for the move off yesterday's high, but its low odds currently

We took out the first level I was watching to the downside (see yesterday's end of day update), at 1159.11, but didn't do it in a 5 wave impulse. So, in my view, it remains open whether or not we saw a top to the rally from the August low at yesterday's high.

For the moment, here's how I'd count it if a top is in, but bear in mind, we could still be in wave [4] of v of (v) or some variation of this count since I don't think we've seen the type of price behaviour I described in yesterday's end of day update:

SPX 1 min - top in at 1162.76?

If a top is in then I don't think we should have any difficulty taking out the other two downside levels I mentioned in yesterday's end of day update, 1152.50 and 1149.21. If we can't take out those levels in an impulsive move, then I'm going to be thinking there may be further upside to come (which may involve some re-labelling). So, until those levels go, there's a high risk of further upside in my view.

21:11 BST - SPX End of Day Update

On the 3 Options set out on the 60 min counts page, I've been  looking for the end of 5 waves up from the August low  to mark the end of minor 2 (or (i) of [c] of 2) on Option 1, the end of wave X on Option 2 or the end of wave [i] of C (or (i) of [iii] of A) on Option 3.

A new high today meant that the immediately bearish count which had the end of 5 waves from the August low at 1157.16 was eliminated and the near term bullish count became the focus. On that count, 1157.16 was only the high of wave (iii), so we still needed wave (v) up to complete the rally from the August low.

Here's the bigger picture shown on the 60 min chart of Option 1, (which is my overall bearish count for the decline from the April 2010 high) which I've updated to take account of today's move (you can see the 60 min chart for the bullish Option, Option 3, on the 60 min counts page):

Chart 1: SPX 60 min - Option 1 - 5 waves up from the August low:

Here's the close up chart I've been posting today which zooms in on the action from the wave (iii) of [c] high at 1157.16:

Chart 2: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low, close up:

I don't think the count for 5 waves up from the wave (iv) low at 1131.87 looks too bad.  However, we haven't seen anything yet to suggest a top.

We need to see an impulsive 5 wave decline. Currently, I'd like to see such a decline take out 1159.11. We then need to see a 3 wave retracement of that decline that holds below the high (presently 1162.76) and for another 5 wave decline to follow. Once we get that, I'll be watching the next retracement up and I'll be looking for it to hold below the low of the first 5 waves down. If it doesn't, I'm going to be very suspicious that further upside may lie ahead.

As to that potential for further upside, at the moment, its possible that the high I've labelled as wave iii at 1152.50 is only wave [1] of iii (and the high at 1162.76 would be wave [3] of iii). If we take out that high in an assumed wave [4] of iii, that possibility will be ruled out. I'd then want to see the low at 1149.21 which I've labelled as wave iv get taken out to preclude the possibility that wave v might extend.

So, the levels I'm watching for now are 1162.76, 1159.11, 1152.50 and 1149.21. Taking out the 1159.11 level will start to suggest that a top may be in. Taking out 1152.50 and then 1149.21 will greatly increase confidence that a top is in at 1162.76 (but obviously, the nature of that top will depend on which of the counts shown on the 60 min counts page is playing out).

20:21 BST - SPX Update: nearing a top?

I've re-labelled the count slightly. Still looking for that elusive top to the rally from the August low on both the bullish and bearish counts.

SPX 1 min - close up:

We may be close now. Wave (v) is 1.236 x wave (i) at 1163. A drop below 1159.11 may be the first sign of a top.

17:45 BST - SPX Update - a further high required to complete 5 waves up from 1131.87?

For the sake of completeness, here's the count I mentioned  in the last post which suggests a further high is needed to complete wave v of (v) up from the wave iv of (v) low:

SPX 1 min - near term bullish count: further high needed to complete it:

Until we see an impulsive move down, the risk, as always, remains to the upside.

17:22 BST - SPX Update: Near term bullish count wins, but have we topped?

Taking out the high at 1157.16 means that the near term bullish count that I've been showing is playing out. Here it is on the overall bearish Option (Option 1 on the 60 min counts page) showing a count for 5 waves up from that wave (iv) low at today's high:

SPX 1 min - near term bullish count: topped?:

And here's a closer look:

SPX 1 min - near term bullish count close up:

Obviously, if we take out the high at 1158.82 then we haven't yet topped. I can certainly see a count from the wave iv of (v) low that would suggest another high is needed to complete wave v of (v), so this current decline from 1158.82 would only be wave [4] of v.

If we have topped, or once we do, we'll have to see how the retracement behaves to gauge whether or not its the end of the rally from the August low or whether the 5 waves up from the low labelled (iv) at 1131.87 is just the first of a larger impulse from that low. At 1158.82, wave (v) is equal to wave (i) so its possible that the rally from 1131.87 is the whole of wave (v).

14:41 BST - SPX Update on the bullish and bearish counts

This is the only way the bear count can survive now - 1157.16 is the invalidation point:

SPX 1 min - bear count:

The near term bullish count will take out that high, if it represents what is playing out, but it needs to stay above 1131.87:

SPX 1 min near term bullish count:

12:31 BST - Dollar Update

The dollar made a new low this morning. I was expecting a new low as you can see from the update I did on Saturday, but because we retraced up quite deeply first, I've relabelled the charts to show the wave (iii) of [v] low at Friday's low (instead of that low being wave iii of (v)), with the retracement up being wave (iv) rather than wave iv of (v):

Dollar 60 min:

Here's a closer look from what I now have as the wave iv of (iii) high at 79.020:

Dollar 5 min:

As you can see, we may be near to completing wave (v) down, provided it doesn't extend. It looks to me like one more low is required to complete 5 waves down from the wave (iv) high at 78.687. If that's right, the monitoring process for a potential impulse move up will resume then.  If we fail to make a new low but instead rally above 78.365, it'll start to suggest that we may have bottomed at the current low of 77.975.

However, be aware that the 78.6% retracement level is at about 77.300 and price may well be headed there. Having said that, currently, wave C is about .618 x wave A and also, wave C is about 1.618 x wave B. That would be an intersting relationship for an end to wave C.

As I mentioned on Saturday, to have any confidence that the decline may be over, we need to see a 5 wave rally, followed by a 3 wave decline that stays above the starting point of the rally. We then need a further 5 wave rally followed by a pullback that stays above the high of the first 5 wave leg up - that's still something that we haven't seen.

You can see on the 5 min chart how we failed to see that following Friday's low - the first 5 waves up which could have been the first wave in an impulse is the leg I have labelled as [A] of a of (iv). A 3 wave retracement to where I have [B] of a of (iv) followed. We then saw another 5 wave rally to where I have [C] of a of (iv). The crucial thing at this stage for an impulse was for the subsquent retracement to stay above the high at [A], which it failed to do. That was the first sign that the possibility that I had mentioned on Saturday that Friday's low was the end of wave (v) was unlikely.

The next sign of this was when we rallied above the high at a, it was possible we were in a one-two-(one)-(two)-(three) up. However, taking out the high at a on the next retracement ruled that out and increased the likelihood of a new low.

So, as mentioned above, I'm expecting another low below 77.975 to complete wave (v) of [v] and C. Then I'll resume the process described on Saturday and above, of looking for signs of an impulse move up, beginning with a 5 wave rally from the new low and a 3 wave pullback.

If we rally now without making a new low and take out the low at 78.365, especially if it occurs in a clear 5 wave move up, I'll start to think we have already seen the end of wave (v). I would then want to see a quick move to take out the highs at 78.687 and 79.020.

21:17 BST - SPX End of Day Update

On the 3 Options set out on the 60 min counts page, I've been  looking for the end of 5 waves up from the August low  to mark the end of minor 2 (or (i) of [c] of 2) on Option 1, the end of wave X on Option 2 or the end of wave [i] of C (or (i) of [iii] of A) on Option 3.

Please refer to the 60 counts page for context.

So far, the high at 1157.16 has held as a potential top based on the ending diagonal count.

You can see the bigger picture of that move up from the August low on the charts of Options 1 and 2 on the 60 min counts page.

Here's a closer look from the high of wave i within the ending diagonal at 1148.59:

Chart 1: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low complete at 1157.16:

One of the levels I wanted to see taken out (see Friday's end of day update) on this bearish count was 1132.09, because that would preclude a count that had wave v of the diagonal still in progress.  We took out that level today and also did it in what has the look of an impulse type wave.

So, for the ending diagonal as I've labelled it, there doesn't appear to be room for another high. So, we've topped or some other count such as the short term bullish count is playing out.

Here's a closer look:

Chart 2: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from the August low complete at 1157.16 close up:

As mentioned in the previous post, I'm not sure at the moment whether we've actually completed an impulse down from today's high (for wave (1) of [3] on the bearish count) or whether we still have another low to come.

If we're still in wave 4 of (1) as shown by the alternate labelling, we have to stay below the low of wave 1 of (1) at 1142.06. If we were to retrace that high, then I'd have to count wave (1) complete at 1131.87 and the rally from there as wave (2). We'd then have to watch the high at 1148.16, since wave (2) must not take that out.

Obviously, for this overall count to remain valid, we need to stay below the high at 1157.16.

Turning to the short term bullish count, you can see the bigger picture on the chart of  Option 3 on the 60 min counts page).

Here's a closer look  showing the ending diagonal for wave v of (iii) on that chart:

Chart 3: SPX 1 min - 5 waves up from August low still in progress:

As you can see, an impulse move down from today's high could easily be part of a wave (iv) correction (I have it as wave [C] of a second zig zag for wave (iv)). So, we can't assume at this stage that an impulse wave down can only be bearish.

As I said in Friday's end of day update, the problem with this bullish count is that its not invalidated unless we take out 1065.21 in an assumed wave (iv). However, as explained in the pre-market post on Friday of this count, if I see a strong impulsive decline that takes out 1091.15, I'd really start to doubt this count.

For the moment, I've assumed a wave (iv) low at 1131.87, with a leading diagonal for the start of wave (v) up. However, as with the bearish count, the move up from the 1131.87 low could still be part of the 5 waves down from 1148.16, so a further low would be needed to complete wave [C] of y on this count. If we take out 1142.06, the I'd assume that wave (iv) completed ate 1131.87.

So, the levels I'm watching for now to the upside are 1142.06, 1148.16 and 1157.16. To the downside, I still want to see 1122.79 taken out in a continuing impulse, but 1091.15 may be more meaningful as an indication that the short term bullish count may not be playing out.
